Hiroshi Fujiwara, a Japanese designer, streetwear pioneer and founder of the Fragment design brand, starts a collaboration with TAG Heuer. Author of collaborations with fashion brands that have become cult and recent initiatives such as POOL Aoyama and the concept stores THE CONVENI, the Japanese designer has designed a new outfit for the iconic TAG Heuer Carrera.
TAG Heuer and Fragment share a disruptive avant-garde spirit. “Hiroshi Fujiwara is the ideal partner to reinterpret this iconic model,” said Jean-Claude Biver, non-executive chairman of the LVMH Group’s watchmaking division. “We are more than happy to be completely free to redesign the TAG Heuer Carrera. “After an initial brief and a deep immersion in the company archives, the designer learned all the history of the TAG Heuer Carrera.
This chronograph occupies a prominent place in the watchmaking imagery linked to the world of motor racing for 55 years; in fact, the collection takes the name of the legendary Carrera Panamericana race that took place in Mexico in the 1950s. With the competition in its DNA, the first TAG Heuer Carrera chronograph, designed in 1963 specifically for race car drivers, was immediately an international success thanks to the revolutionary design of its dial.
For the first time, the ring that secures the dial to the casing included the indispensable second scale, ensuring a larger display and greater readability. Its specifications were based on well established rules of ergonomics and clarity: the easygrip crown allowed a daily manual charge, the chronograph buttons were easy to activate, the large, minimalist dial had clear indexes and subdivisions and slightly concave counters.
The original model of 1963 is the version chosen by Hiroshi Fujiwara to be interpreted and transformed into a model that follows the stylistic codes of Fragment. “We have created something that the public does not expect to find in the current TAG Heuer collection,” commented Hiroshi Fujiwara.
“There are not many watches that I would like, but I would like that for sure!” TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02 by Fragment by Hiroshi Fujiwara remains faithful to its avant-garde spirit, powered by the chronograph movement of the Heuer 02 manufacture, with the counters positioned as in the 1963 model.
The new version of the timepiece includes a designer leather strap bold and a black and gray NATO strap included in the package. Three black counters with hand-painted white markers decorate the dial: the minute counter at 3 o’clock, the second sub-dial at 6 o’clock for continuous seconds and the chrono-hour counter at 9 o’clock. rhodium with Super-LumiNova illuminate the glossy black dial which also includes a silver flange and the Heuer logo at 12 o’clock.
The 39 mm stainless steel polished case has a sapphire crystal case back engraved with the limited edition serial number . The TAG Heuer Carrera by Fragment (produced in a limited edition of 500 pieces) thus marks a new chapter in the iconic model saga.
