The measure would allow gun owners with a state-issued concealed-carry permit to carry a handgun in any state that allows concealed weapons.

On Wednesday afternoon, the House of Representatives voted in favor of the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017.

Opponents, mostly Democrats, said the bill could endanger public safety by overriding state laws that place strict limits on guns. In 2013, Ms. Allen, a single mother of two, was arrested in New Jersey for unlawful possession of a weapon even though she was licensed to carry a concealed firearm in her home state of Pennsylvania.

Combining these bills will be sacrificing actual progress for public safety in order to undermine state gun laws across the country.

The measure also included a host of carrot and stick incentives for federal agencies and states to step up reporting of prohibited firearms possessors to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System while speeding up the appeals process for those denied a gun transfer, setting a 60-day window for the latter.

Under the broad strokes of the House-passed Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, having a concealed-carry permit issued by one state makes it legal to carry in any state.

"I'm proud of Texas, our history of responsible gun ownership and our requirements for a license to carry that seek to protect the ones we love from abusers, violent offenders, and stalkers", he added.

Gun control has long generated heated debate, and the controversies surrounding restrictions have only accelerated with the growing number of mass shootings across the country.

The National Rifle Association would especially like to thank Rep. Richard Hudson, Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, Speaker Paul Ryan, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Majority Whip Steve Scalise for their extraordinary efforts to pass this important legislation. Other states, which have "shall" issue instead of "may" issue clauses regarding concealed carry permits, are much more permissive.

In a tweet sent last night, Governor Andrew Cuomo blasted the measure, saying that it would allow people convicted of violent misdemeanors out-of-state to carry hidden weapons into NY.

Concealed carry reciprocity is the gun lobby's top priority legislation.
