Flu season soars in the United States, especially in the South

Washoe County has confirmed its first two flu-related deaths of the new winter season.

The groups medical professionals say are at risk for the flu, older people and pregnant women.

No other details have been released.

"They had quite a substantial epidemic due to H3N2, so there's a lot of speculation that that's foreboding a severe season for us also", she said from Vancouver.

Flu season is underway, and health officials say there are signs the vaccination may only be 10 percent effective against the main strain. "Even if it's not a ideal match, it's very important, not just for yourself, but also to protect those with whom you may come in contact - including babies too young to get vaccinated and people who have weakened immune systems".

Other explanations for Penobscot's numbers include the possibility that there are actually more flu cases in the community or that designated health care providers are being especially avid in reporting their cases.

Well, not exactly. According to federal government statistics, less than half the adults who should get the influenza vaccine each year actually do so.

Still, "I believe it's worth getting the vaccine", Siegel said. If passed, the legislation would protect healthcare professionals from being fired for refusing a flu shot.

Numerous physicians' offices and pharmacies also have the flu vaccine available.

Most Oklahoma cases involve those age 50 or older or those four and younger. "So if you need to be out and about running errands and meeting up with friends and family, it's wise to protect yourself-and them-as best you can".

The flu season is finally upon us, but recent reports revealed that this year's flu shot may be ineffective.

Data from the CDC's interactive flu-tracking site show cases of people falling ill with "influenza-like illnesses" (ILI) are more widespread than in previous years.

"We do see a predominance of the H3N2 virus that was common last season", Flannery said. "Many are hospitalized and some die".

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, said that vaccine effectiveness is not a simple measure. The flu vaccine is very effective against these, she noted.
