Google blocks YouTube access from Amazon media devices

Amazon said in a statement, "Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website". Here's hoping that both parties can come to some form of agreement soon. The device has reportedly been codenamed "Manhattan" and will offer Google Assistant, Google Photos, YouTube and video calling as well as acting as a smart hub.

Google blocked YouTube access via the Echo Show, Amazon's smart speaker with a touchscreen, on Tuesday and will stop supporting YouTube on Amazon's Fire TV set-top box on January 1.

A couple of weeks ago, YouTube reappeared on the Amazon Echo Show and while it wasn't quite as nice as the version that got pulled by Google, it was still YouTube working on the Echo Show again.

With each having a significant share of the leverage, it is going to be down to who blinks first, but with Amazon's business model based on low-profit margin ecosystem lock into a non-Google version of Android, any compromise on its side will be costly.

Amazon seems to refrain from selling Google products that compete directly with its own, such as Amazon Echo range (which compete with Google Home) and Fire TV (which compete with Google's Chromecast). "Similar reviews are also now hitting the Fire TV store page, with one reviewer saying, "[YouTube] was my main selling point, and I am furious that they are getting rid of it. Google had said that Amazon's implementation of YouTube blocked what Google considered critical features. Amazon announced today that the Amazon Prime Video app is now available on Apple TV devices in more than 100 countries.

As for streaming TV alternatives, just about any other device will play YouTube.

Google said this "lack of reciprocity" was the reason it had stopped YouTube support to some Amazon devices. In a statement, it cited the fact that Amazon does not sell Google hardware on its various platforms.

The latest twist in the saga is that Google is pulling YouTube from all Echo Show and Fire TV units. The decision to block YouTube is in retaliation for Amazon's refusal to sell some Google products that compete with Amazon gadgets.

While Amazon and Apple seem to be getting along, numerous same complaints Google made against Amazon hold true for Apple as well.
