The World's Largest Starbucks Just Opened In China

It's also the largest Starbucks in the world, spanning an area almost twice as large as the next biggest, a Roastery in Seattle that opened three years ago.

Howard Schultz, executive chairman of Starbucks Coffee Company, said the Reserve Roastery, was Starbucks' "boldest, most premium store ever".

The AR experience is powered by Alibaba Group's scene-recognition technology and users can access digital experiences, such as viewing menus, ordering special coffee blends and booking customised experiences via a dedicated Roastery app or through Alibaba's Taobao app. Customers at this handsome outlet settled on the West Nanjing Road shopping strip, now can watch beans being roasted, sample high-end brews and use a Starbucks augmented-reality digital app to interact with the store.

"We firmly believe it is our role and responsibility to use our scale to give back to the communities as we continue to grow in China, and with the people of China", Belinda Wong, CEO of Starbucks China, said in a statement.

It is the second such high-end concept store opened by the coffee chain after the first opened in Seattle three years ago. The company has already inked a deal for an enormous 43,000-square-foot Reserve Roastery in Chicago that's set to open in 2019.

But the store won't retain its title for long.

Starbucks Shanghai Reserve Roastery is now open at 789 Nanjing Road W.in Shanghai, China.

In a sign of the times, Starbucks partnered with Chinese tech giant Alibaba to aggressively promote the Shanghai store opening online.

One of its three coffee bars is 88-feet long, the longest Starbucks bar in the world - because waiting in line is so 2016.

Starbucks increased its China investment during July, when plans were announced to buy out its joint venture partners. Same-store sales gained 8 percent in the country during the most recent quarter, compared with 2 percent globally. Since then, it has opened more than 3,000 stores in 136 cities (more than 600 are in Shanghai), and is adding a new one every 15 hours, the company said in a statement.
