That left Woods tied for 10th at four-under 212, 10 strokes behind leader Charley Hoffman, in his first tournament in almost 10 months following spinal fusion surgery.

However, his clubhead speed was impressive, as was his putting stroke, as he ended the day just three shots off the lead, held by new European
No 1 Tommy Fleetwood. However, those odds were quickly trimmed as he got off to an encouraging start.

A birdie chance from similar range went begging on the par-3 second, but Woods moved into red figures in style on the par-5 third, drilling a 2-iron from 260 yards on to the green and two-putting from 45 feet.

After two strong rounds that had many followers believing Tiger was back, the former world number one stumbled, recording four of his five bogeys in the first seven holes to finish at three-over par 75. Woods was 1 over on the back nine with one birdie and two bogeys and now sits five shots off the lead at 7 under.

Although the bogey at the end will disappoint the 41-year-old it was great to see the Tiger fist-pump on show again today and we can only hope he continues his fine form over the next two days to keep challenging for a tour win which would be an incredible achievement in his first tournament back from a 10-month injury layoff. "Those are the internal struggles I've not been through in a while".

Fleetwood's countryman Justin Rose (68) was alone in fourth on eight-under, with Woods a stroke back alongside Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler, who both shot 70s, Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (66) and Italy's Francesco Molinari (68). "It's going to take time, a lot more practice, a lot more training and more tournaments".
