Accusing Iran of helping to arm the Houthis during the conflict, the Saudi-led coalition has closed air, land and sea routes.

"I call on our brothers in neighboring countries.to stop their aggression and lift the blockade", he said, "and we will turn the page".

"It demands the anti-government forces in Yemen to desist from attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia", the FO added.

Fearing renewed clashes, people were opting to stay at home on Thursday night, witnesses said, as armed supporters of both sides deployed in some streets.

Later in the day, Saleh said he was ready for a "new page" in relations with the Saudi-led coalition pounding Yemen if it stopped attacks on his country. Together these groups have been fighting against the Saudi-backed forces of ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi since 2015.

The clash between Saleh's supporters and the Houthis underscores the complex situation in Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Middle East, where war between Houthis and the Saudi-backed Hadi has caused one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in recent times.

Officials loyal to Saleh began to report that their supporters and fighters had seized control of the state TV stations, airport, camps in the capital.

Violence in Sanaa has left at least 40 fighters dead or wounded since Wednesday, rebel chief Abdul Malik al-Houthi said, as Saleh loyalists and rebel fighters continued to clash on Saturday afternoon.

However, the Houthis were less open to Mr Saleh's idea.

More than 8,670 people have been killed and 49,960 injured since the Saudi-led coalition intervened in the Yemen conflict, according to the UN.

In a statement carried by the Saudi-owned Al-Hadath channel, the coalition said it was "confident of the will of the leaders and sons" of Saleh's GPC party to return to Arab fold.

"It is not unusual or surprising that Saleh turns his back on a partnership he never believed in", the group's political bureau said in a statement.

Saleh agreed to leave presidency in 2012, n 33 years in front of Yemen, after months of popular protests and global pressure (including that of its neighbours) to prevent anor civil war being unleashed as in Libya or Syria.

He told Yemenis all across the country that if they support him, "to defend the nation, the republic and the revolution".

In response to Saleh's speech, Houthi leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi stressed the need for dialogue in another televised appearance in Saturday, and called on Saleh to "be more mature".

A statement from Saleh's GPC appealed on Saturday to security and military forces and all public employees to be neutral and not to implement instructions given by the Houthis in all provinces.
