Uttar Pradesh, Delhi topped crime list in 2016, says NCRB

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report has placed Mumbai first in offences against senior citizens and second, after Delhi, in crimes against women as well as children. This alone increased the total number of violent crimes in 2016 as compared to previous year, by 0.8%. The crimes against women included 2,183 cases of assault with intent to outrage modesty, 1,142 cases of kidnapping and abduction and 712 cases of rape. As per the data, only six cases of crimes against the elderly were registered in 2015, which increased to 56 in 2016. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reported the highest incidence of rape with 4,882 cases (12.5%) and 4,816 (12.4%) followed by Maharashtra 4,189 (10.7%) during 2016.

UP again leads the list with 4,954 cases registered.

Madhya Pradesh comes out top with 20.6% of the total number of cases in 2016 followed by Maharashtra - 18.4%.

Delhi police officials claim that the main reason for the national capital recording the highest number of cases is that as compared to other cities of different states, there is "free and fair" registration of cases, particularly of heinous crimes. As many as 1,847 cases of crime against children cases were reported in the State in 2016, including 54 murders.

Delhi reported the highest crime rate under the IPC crimes followed by Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, the report said, adding a total of 37,37,870 persons were arrested, 32,71,262 chargesheeted, 7,94,616 convicted and 11,48,824 were acquitted in 2016. In Crime against women, Delhi reported highest crime rate of 160.4 in comparison to national average rate of 55.2. For violent cases like murder and attempt to murder, the city was ranked second by the NCRB, just after Delhi. Delhi also reported the most number of cases of economic offences at 5,942 cases or 19.3 per cent followed by Jaipur at 4,742 cases and Mumbai at 4,191 cases. For other offences, such as traffic challans, NCRB will provide separate data from next year. A total of 1,06,900 ammunition was seized during 2016.

Chennai has reported the highest number of cases of SLL crimes, accounting for 32.9% of total SLL crimes reported amongst 19 metropolitan cities followed by Kochi (12.9%) and Surat (12.6%) during 2016.

Atrocities/crime against Scheduled Castes have increased by 5.5 per cent in 2016 (40,801) over 2015 (38,670), while atrocities/crime against Scheduled Tribes have increased by 4.7 per cent in 2016 (6,568) over 2015 (6,276).

Chandigarh ranks first, hence worst, among all states and union territories in terms of crime against senior citizens (people aged above 60).
