Just as Riverdale is a darker take on the classic comics series, Sabrina will do the same for everyone's favorite witch. Sabrina, a new TV series based on the comic book The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina from Archie Comics, moved from The CW to Netflix, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. It comes from the same team behind "Riverdale": creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, producer Greg Berlanti and director Lee Toland Krieger. Netflix has given a yet-untitled Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV series a 20-episode, two-season, straight-to-series order.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina TV series heading to Netflix

Followers know that Sabrina - a big piece of the same Archie Comics lore-verse where Riverdale resides - was kept out of The CW's series ahead of the network's September announcement that Sabrina was getting its own show. Inspired by the comic book series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the show will reimagine the the story of Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a darker, more horror-oriented storyline.

Sources say that the show is set to shoot back-to-back with the first series of episodes filming from February to June and the second from June to October. Expect Netflix to formally announce the release date sometime after production wraps on the first season. Instead, it is envisioned as a "dark coming-of-age story", with Sabrina Spellman battling evil forces while also trying to be a normal half-human / half-witch teenager. Perhaps streaming results from Riverdale appearing on Netflix enticed the streaming giant to make a move in acquiring Sabrina for themselves. The Sabrina series could be the first of many Riverdale spin-offs, with Aguirre-Sacasa saying before the show debuted that he wanted to "expand" the world of the series. This isn't the Melissa Joan Hart series that's for sure. Netflix hasn't issued any information about how the series would be rolled out, but assuming we could see the two seasons in one calendar year looks like a good bet.
