Christmas market EVACUATED as 'bomb found' - armed police on scene

An employee working in a local pharmacy was the first to report the suspicious package to the police.

Police have now confirmed that the explosive device has now been defused.

Police are "currently deployed to central Potsdam because a suspicious package [was found there]", the local police department said in a Twitter post.

On this occasion, package with alleged explosive had been deposited next to a pharmacy near traditional Christmas market in Potsdam and was discovered around 14.30, police said.

Brandenburg state Interior Minister Karl-Heinz Schröter told reporters a powder found in the device is undergoing tests to determine whether it was explosive.

The Christmas market was closed and the area has been cleared.

Past year on December 19, suspect Anis Amri of Tunisia drove a hijacked truck through crowds of people killing 11 and injuring dozens, Deutsche Welle reported.

Christmas markets are extremely popular in Germany and have increased security this year following the deadly truck attack at a market in downtown Berlin last December.

The German intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, further claimed the suspects had been carrying out target reconnaissance of the areas in which Christmas markets in Essen, Germany, would be held.
