In deference to cultural accuracy, the studio focused on locating an ethnically Chinese young woman to play Hua Mulan, who disguised herself as a man to take her father's army conscription in fifth-century China.

Chinese actress Liu Yifei or also known as Crystal Liu, will be playing the lead role in the live-action film adaptation of famous Disney movie "Mulan". Many also voiced support for the diverse, star-studded cast of Disney's live-action The Lion King adaptation, announced earlier this month.

It took a year of searching and almost 1,000 candidates, but the Walt Disney Studios has finally found its Mulan.

Critics said that casting white actor Billy Magnussen to play the new role of Prince Anders was an attempt to "whitewash" the story, which is set in a fictional Middle Eastern city.

One recent example is this year's science-fiction film "Ghost in the Shell", which saw actress Scarlett Johansson in the role of a Japanese character, which drew heavy criticism and demands to boycott the production.

It's reported a team of casting directors visited five continents and spoke to almost 1,000 candidates for the role which required credible martial arts skills and the ability to speak English.

In Liu, Disney found the whole package. You may have heard about 2017's "The Chinese Widow", in which she starred alongside Emile Hirsch.

Chinese actress Liu Yifei has been given the tick of approval from Disney fans following accusations of "whitewashing" in Hollywood.

She has starred alongside Jackie Chan in the 2008 action movie The Forbidden Kingdom and 2014's Outcast with Nicolas Cage.

The remake has been pencilled in for a 2019 release.
