"We were one of a network of graduate student unions across the country that have been organizing events over the past few weeks as part of a nationwide movement to address the highly problematic provisions of the GOP tax plan", Lin told CNN.

The government has proposed a tax reform that would tax graduate students for their tuition benefit that is now covered as part of their funding package for graduate school. The calculator allows concerned PhD students to estimate the amount of tax they will pay if the current House proposal is enacted.

Many grad students are already living at or below the poverty line, with reports that many can not afford groceries without food stamps. "It would be a really significant cut in my income".

At the University of Southern California, they held signs with sayings like "Graduate students research cures for cancer".

Velan and fellow student Kathy Shield created a calculator to figure out how the change, if it became law, would affect students' taxes. The House bill views that tuition as income.

Some of the nation's brightest STEM students protested at Caltech in an unusual display of campus political activism. The House version of the tax bill, passed this month, would repeal a decades-old provision that has shielded graduate tuition from taxation, potentially increasing student tax bills by as much as $10,000 a year.

The provincial government has announced its tuition freeze for post-secondary students has been extended for another year.

Numerous students brought research and grading to do in public to demonstrate their daily role at the university, Charles said.

The group chanted "Black Lives Matter" after David Stamps, president of the Graduate Student Association, spoke about the importance of solidarity with other marginalized communities. Single students with a child, married couples, and married couples with kids also see large increases in TTO under the House plan. For married couples at a private university, the increases in ETR under the House plan were anywhere from an additional 4.7 percent to 8.8 percent, depending on the year, with the highest ETR being 14.7 percent.

The freeze means students will save approximately $1,500 over four year sin tuition costs, according to the news release.

Universities often waive graduation tuition in exchange for students' work as teaching assistants and researchers. If it passes, Republicans will need to reconcile the two versions of the tax plan.

Publicly funded universities in Alberta, like the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, can't raise their tuition rates for the duration of the freeze.

"The UC system has prized itself on diversity - its first-generation, low-income students - and this is just going to reverse all these gains", said Yen, president of the UC Student-Workers Union (UAW 2865).
