Was Padmavati controversy created only for publicity? Bhansali grilled by MP panel

Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali will meet Parliamentary Panel today related to his upcoming Indian period drama movie titled 'Padmavati'. "The panel has asked Mr Bhansali and Mr Joshi to appear before it and present their views on the movie".

They said the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief had told another parliamentary panel earlier in the day that a decision on the film would be taken after showing it to experts. The Parliamentary panel on Information and Technology had invited the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali along with the Information and Broadcasting ministry and censor board officials.

Petitioner M.L. Sharma, an advocate, had sought criminal prosecution of the movie's director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and producer Mukesh Ambani, and a stay on the film's release overseas, which he claimed the makers were planning.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom 18 submitted the new application yesterday, they said.

For the third time this month, the Supreme Court turned down a request to ban "Padmavati" and said, in a rebuke to Chief Ministers and others in high offices who have spoken out against the film, "those holding public offices should not comment on such issues".

The filmmakers have submitted three applications, including the latest 3D one, to the Censor Board.

The original release date of the movie was December 1 but due to the controversy, the makers have deferred it indefinitely.

Many historians are unconvinced that Padmavati actually existed. Our clock has stopped now, we are just waiting and waiting.

"Needless to say that the pleadings are premature", the bench had said that CBFC was a statutory body and the court could not injunct it from doing its duty of certifying the film.

Taking exception to some portions of Sharma's petition, the court said it was "unwarranted and scurrilous".

Although the court did not name any politician or party, the rap came days after the BJP chief ministers of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan had declared their intention of banning the movie in their states for allegedly hurting Rajput sentiments.
