Pence: Trump 'Actively Considering' Moving US Embassy to Jerusalem

Moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would threaten the prospects for peace, the Jordanian king told USA decision-makers on Wednesday.

"It's a question of when, not if", a United States official said at the time about a move to Jerusalem, which Israel considers its eternal capital.

Next month, Trump is due to sign another waiver postponing a transfer for another six months.

Mike Pence made the remarks in a keynote address at an event in NY commemorating the 70th anniversary of the United Nations vote for partition of Palestine, which led to the creation of the state of Israel.

The king, visiting Capitol Hill to discuss US-Jordanian strategic, military and economic cooperation, said that moving the embassy could only come as part of a comprehensive deal for a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He said he will visit Israel next month and address the Knesset.

"President Donald Trump is actively considering when and how to move the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem", Pence told the gathering, hosted by Israel's Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon.

If as a forerunner to moving the embassy, Trump formally recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital, he is likely to make clear that the recognition is only of west Jerusalem in order to keep the final status of the entire city something to be determined in negotiations.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin published a video on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the partition plan in which he said that "The United Nations vote on the 29th of November 1947, will stay in the memory of the Jewish people forever".

He then went on to debate whether the possibility of a peace deal between the two sides is near. "I want to give that a shot before I even think about moving the embassy to Jerusalem", he added.

Israel's argument is that moving the embassy would correct a historical anomaly, whereby the USA does not recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

In just a few more weeks, the president will decide whether to approve the move or stave off the decision for another six months.

The current Israeli government boasts it has done more for the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories than any other government. "This is our solemn promise to you, to Israel and to the world". "We have returned to our home land, and have turned it once again into a land of milk and honey". Theodor Herzl dreamed of the impossible.
