Microsoft says that the massive expansion might not be completed until 2025. Although the project is set to start in fall of 2018, it won't be completed for another five to seven years after that.

MICROSOFT LIKES big campuses and it can not lie, which is why its re-building its Seattle headquarters to fit in an extra 8,000 workers.

The developer of the Spring District, by the way, is Wright Runstad, which back in 1986 built the first six X-shaped buildings that will be replaced as part of this latest renovation.

The extension of Microsoft's Redmond campus is a reflection of the company's recent growth, and it also follows other redevelopment projects at Microsoft's offices in Vancouver BC and London. The 18 new buildings part of the overhaul will be Energy-Smart Buildings that utilize Azure to monitor the building system and energy usage optimization, according to the company. The days of an individual office for every employee seem to be ending as people gravitate toward communal spaces with high ceilings and colorful furniture.

Microsoft's future Redmond headquarters will look and operate more like small city, featuring a two-acre open plaza that can host 12,000 people. New sports fields and recreation trails will dot the area.

Microsoft did not disclose how much total they are spending on the expansion.

The work will be done about the same time that the Redmond light-rail station opens, scheduled for 2023. "It is a clear commitment to our employees and to this region".

"(We have the) opportunity to really create a working environment that matches our new culture", Smith said.

Our new buildings will focus on inclusive design and accessible technology to empower all of our employees.

Microsoft started renovating office spaces almost a decade ago and has already modernized several buildings in the open-format style.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), meanwhile, has built over the last decade a dense, a high-rise urban campus that has completely transformed Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, and more recently, the northern edge of downtown.
