Putting the United Kingdom "at the forefront of the artificial intelligence (AI) and data revolution" has been announced as a key plank of the government's Industrial Strategy which was launched today. As well as AI, the strategy also makes a big play for future of mobility, with the pledge that the United Kingdom will become "a world leader in the way people, goods and services move".

The white paper can be accessed here.

The government has launched its landmark industrial strategy with the aim of making the United Kingdom the most innovative nation on the globe by 2030.

This includes £170m to transform the UK's construction sector and £210m to improve early diagnosis of illnesses. "Raising digital literacy goes hand in hand with maintaining and building on productivity gains in the industry, that continue to outpace the United Kingdom average, and supports the Government's aspiration of a digital economy that works for all".

The government's new industrial strategy has made local smart energy systems one of its priority areas of development.

"At some point, there really does need to be some detail on how the UK Government plans to seize them, rather than a series of strategy papers setting out how important they are", he said.

The Government has released its Industrial Strategy with a focus on four "growth industries", set for billions of pounds in extra investment.

The government's long-awaited industrial strategy called on British companies to meet the challenges of an ageing society by helping people work well beyond the traditional retirement age.

"These deals are just the first steps but will be instrumental in securing the future strength of the United Kingdom life sciences industry, helping the United Kingdom economy prosper and allowing NHS patients to get better and faster access to world-class medicines discovered and developed here in Britain".

Sector deals: Partnerships between government, business and government to pursue innovation in life sciences, artificial intelligence, the automotive industry and the construction sectors.

According to the white paper, the way buildings are created in the United Kingdom has not change substantially change in 40 years and "needs a drastic overhaul if it is to deliver the building that the United Kingdom needs".

The strategy says the United Kingdom will take an AI global leadership role by investing £9m in the new Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation announced in the Budget. "Yet, as a vital UK-wide vehicle for employer investment in skills, it is disappointing that apprenticeships are not explicitly recognised as a key route for driving up productivity".

"For years, businesses have been crying out for more support to take advantage of the opportunities that new technology provides". The CPA strongly encourages government to ensure manufacturers and distributors are invited to make a more significant contribution to the CLC, and that ultimately what has been announced is not harmed by the Brexit transition period and the UK's post-Referendum deal once it has been finalised. To create a sustainable economy requires greater use of data and technology to reinvigorate and grow many sectors - this includes manufacturing, professional services, retail banking and telecoms.

It will form part of a zero emission road transport strategy to be published in the coming months, with a further £40 million pledged to support research and development of on-street and wireless charging technologies. "Only then, will we create an innovative culture effective for driving the United Kingdom forward in this global and competitive market".
