Coffee Is Officially Good For You (Again)

Researchers compared the results of more than 200 studies to determine drinking coffee is more likely to benefit health than harm it. According to the study, regularly drinking three cups of coffee reduces risk of cirrhosis in 70% and liver cancer by 40%.

The strongest benefits of coffee consumption were seen in reduced risks of liver disease, including cancer.

The study does not suggest increased consumption of coffee for individuals as there is a need for further research as to the causes of the correlation.

Coffee is the most loved and desired drink consumed throughout the world.

The study conducted by researchers led by Robin Poole, a specialist registrar in public health at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, noticed greatest risk reduction for liver cirrhosis.

Reassuringly, harms were not apparent apart from during pregnancy when coffee drinking was linked to low birth weight, premature birth (in the first six months of pregnancy) and miscarriage. Generally speaking, though, a cup isn't understood to be a full mug, which usually holds around 12 ounces of liquid (although they can be as large as 16 or even 20 ounces); a cup is only eight ounces, so two mugs of coffee (24 ounces) are roughly equivalent to around three cups of the stuff. We found that there was a lower risk of both conditions in people who drank more coffee. But existing evidence is of lower quality from observational research and randomised controlled trials are needed to strengthen the evidence of benefits. Drinking coffee beyond these amounts was not associated with harm, but the benefits were less pronounced.

"Factors, for example, age, regardless of whether individuals smoked or not and how much exercise they took could all have had an impact", he said. "Should doctors recommend drinking coffee to prevent disease?" But they insist the findings prove moderate coffee consumption is safe, and more than likely to be good for you.
