The autonomous fleet is small compared with the more than 2 million people who drive for Uber but reflects dedication to the company's strategy of developing self-driving cars.

Volvo said the vehicles "incorporate all the necessary safety, redundancy and core autonomous driving technologies that are required for Uber to add its own self-driving technology".

Uber is now trying to outpace autonomous vehicle rivals such as Tesla, Lyfy and the Alphabet subsidiary Waymo, which are each developing their own technologies.

Either way, the new deal proves that Uber is serious about self-driving tech.

She said the new agreement puts Uber on the path toward rolling out mass-produced autonomous cars at scale. Uber has worked with third-party components manufacturers to build software and hardware for driverless cars, then worked closely with Volvo to outfit the automaker's XC-90 vehicles with the technology.

"Our aim is to be the supplier of choice for autonomous driving ride-sharing service providers globally", said Volvo in a statement.

Waymo announced its intentions to launch its own fleet of self-driving vehicles, which, just like Uber, would be controlled by an app, two weeks ago.

The XC90 will take a testing period with safety driver and then the company will make a test of the vehicle running without safety driver so as to check whether the auto is able to give proper autonomous driving.

The use of autonomous cars is widely seen as critical for the future of Uber's business.
