"I think now definitely we going to sit down with the team and reassess the whole year, see what we've done good, what we can improve".

Grigor Dimitrov's talent took him to the brink of his biggest career win - but he needed more than that to get over the line.

Dimitrov, whose title at The O2 joins previous victories in Cincinnati, Sofia and Brisbane, is still without a Grand Slam title and he acknowledged "there is a lot to be done" as he aims to make further strides in the game.

A bruising first set went in Sock's favour before Zverev took the second easily. I'm in the right place, and I deserve to be here in this tournament.

It wasn't the Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal matchup many fans had hoped for, but they were left satisfied as the two 26-year-olds delivered the longest final since the tournament returned to a three-set format in 2008.

"I felt I had a good mental toughness throughout the whole year", Dimitrov said.

It soon became apparent that Dimitrov would not have the third set all his own way, though, as Sock composed himself and began to attack his opponent's awkward slice with heavier forehands.

But, after edging in front during a tight third set, it is Dimitrov who will contest the final against David Goffin.

"I was in my match which was the important thing". I knew what to expect.

The ATP Finals have had an unusual flavour this year, missing Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic while world number one Nadal was forced to pull out injured after his opening round-robin match.

And the set duly stayed on serve until the eighth game, when an unfortunate net cord for Sock was followed by two double faults in quick succession that offered Dimitrov two chances to break. I was very composed with myself and not let any negative thoughts come into my head. That's what I didn't do today.' He will still end the year in the top-five of the ATP rankings.

Yet the Swiss and Dimitrov will take home a record prize of $2.5m should they win the ATP Tour's season-ending event as undefeated champions.

"I'm still trying to think about what I just did", said the Bulgarian after his victory against Goffin.

"It was not easy for me to lose my serve from the start". In the second, I had some opportunities to come back, to break back, but he was really solid.

"Of course, one of my main goals is to win a tournament, a grand slam tournament", Dimitrov said. "This has always been, again, a dream of mine".
