Earlier Thursday, Tweeden had said Franken groped her and kissed her without her consent in 2006 while they were on a USO tour overseas.

In a statement, Franken said Leeann Tweeden's account of his actions, which allegedly occurred in a skit rehearsal with the then-comedian, did not match his memory. When she was back in the U.S., Tweeden looked through a CD with photos from the tour and discovered one of Franken grabbing at her chest while she was sleeping.

Democrats throughout the morning weighed in with disappointment toward Franken and calls for an Ethics Committee investigation.

Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said, "I believe her, and if there's an ethics investigation, that should move forward as well".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) agreed.

Franken has said that he has no idea what was going through his head when the photo was taken and that it makes him feel "disgusted".

"I certainly don't remember the rehearsal for the skit in the same way, but I send my sincerest apologies to Leeann", he said.

"The allegations are serious, we need to take them seriously and I support an ethics investigation".

McConnell, meanwhile has called on Moore to exit the race over the allegations made against him.

I've decided it's time to tell my story.

"He had a chance to apologize to me then, because he knew - he knew exactly what he did to me then and that picture was out there", she said". "It wasn't until I was back in the United States and looking through the CD of photos we were given by the photographer that I saw this one", Tweeden says of the photo, which shows Franken grinning, his hands on Tweeden's clothed breasts.

"The first thing I want to do it apologize; the Leeann, to everyone else who was part of that tour, to everyone who has worked for me, to everyone I represent and to everyone who counts on me to be an ally and supporter and champion of women", he said.

Embattled Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore knocked Republican leaders on Thursday for their response to allegations of sexual misconduct against Minnesota Sen.

"There were people around me who said, 'Oh, my God, you will get annihilated and you will never work in this town again, ' and I was afraid of that". I strongly condemn this behavior and the Senate Ethics Committee must open an investigation.

Tweeden credits an interview with California Congresswoman Jackie Speer during which Speer recalled being sexually assaulted when she was a young political aide. "If there are other people who come out and say he's done this, I don't know". "I said something like, 'Relax Al, this isn't SNL ... we don't need to rehearse the kiss'".
