Supplies still needed for Operation Christmas Child

According to Christina Mabry, boxes filled with gifts will be accepted and sent to a regional processing center where they are examined to ensure all items are appropriate and the boxes are packed properly before being shipped to their final destinations. It's all part of Samaritan's Purse's annual project, Operation Christmas Child.

"Our word for this season of collection is 'believe, '" said Penny Huffman, Operation Christmas Child coordinator for the church.

"Fifteen years later, they can tell you every item that was in that box - it means so much to them", Hayenga said.

OCC is an annual program of evangelist Franklin Graham's global relief agency Samaritan's Purse.

Initially, there were 17 volunteers on hand Monday - the crowd grew throughout the afternoon - as Forest Home cut the ribbon on its Operation Christmas Child collection site.

The boxes contain gifts for boys and girls from ages 2 to 14.

When asked how many boxes she expects to see around the county, Cleveland replied, "The goal for Cullman County is 10,000".

"I think students get out of it a sense of pride, a sense of joy, a bigger awareness of the world around them, because we do a lot of talking about where these shoeboxes go, and what are the needs of these kids". Also, the gift does not need to be wrapped; but if it is, the lid should be wrapped separately so it can be removed easily for inspection.

Gerri Miller, 37, of Oberlin, has been involved with Operation Christmas Child since 2003, when she first heard about it in college.

School supplies can be life-changing.

Ken will open the drop-off location on Monday, Dec. 4, at 11 join with the other 4,500 locations in Opening Day Prayer.

Klosterbuer and Hayenga have each met refugees that now live in Worthington who received an Operation Christmas Child box of gifts when they were children.

Church members encourage donations other items besides just toys, like hygiene items and school supplies.

The Panhandle alone will collect close to 20,000 boxes.
