"Manchester United are prepared to let Marouane Fellaini leave for nothing at the end of the season rather than sell the midfielder in January".

The Red Devils have not given up hope of changing Fellaini's mind but the player, who turns 30 next week, is understood to want more playing time and a longer and more lucrative deal than he was offered.

Senior United sources insist he will not be sold then and they are resigned to him running down his contract and walking out for nothing next summer when he will be a vital part of Belgium's squad for the World Cup in Russian Federation.

In other recent United contract news, 12-month clauses to extend the current contracts of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Ashley Young to 2019 are expected to be exercised in the coming weeks.

As the former Everton man is out of contract in the summer and United do no hold any options to trigger an automatic extension he would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with any club outside the Premier League in January.

United have built on that promising start, sitting second in the Premier League behind Manchester City and on track to make the Champions League last 16.

Since then, Fellaini's United career has been a variable that fluctuated even to this date; from getting jeered by the club's fans themselves to becoming their Europa League hero.

MAROUANE FELLAINI has stunned Jose Mourinho by turning down a new contract.

Gooners, would Fellaini fit in well at Arsenal?

Martial, 21, has only started three Premier League games for United this season but has been used as a substitute to great effect by Mourinho, with the Frenchman having scored four times after being introduced off the bench.
