S.Korea, US Kick off Joint Naval Exercise Involving 3 US Carriers

According to reports, the exercise will involve seven South Korean and 11 US ships, as well as the USS Ronald Reagan, Theodore Roosevelt, and Nimitz.

The governments should also tell North Korea that should it "instead take a step in the right direction", the U.S., South Korea and the rest of the global community are "ready to present a brighter future".

"The training is aimed at restraining North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations and showing our military's strong willingness to act and military preparedness", the JCS said, quoted in the local press.

In addition to the USS Ronald Reagan, the USS Nimitz and the USS Theodore Roosevelt, the U.S. Navy also will mobilize 11 Aegis ships.

The drills began in waters off South Korea's eastern coast.

This is the first time that three American aircraft carriers have conducted joint maneuvers in the western Pacific since 2007.

"The participating forces of both countries plan to enhance their ability to implement combined operations and interoperability through aircraft carrier escort operations, aviation operations, and shooting", the JCS said in a statement.

Trump had also delivered a sharp warning to North Korea in a speech at South Korea's parliament on Wednesday, telling the country: "Do not underestimate us". It also flew two new midrange missiles over Japan and threatened to launch them toward Guam, a U.S. Pacific territory and military hub.
