Disney is in talks to purchase 21st Century Fox, acquiring its slate of original titles and rights to various franchises, according to a CNBC report. The talks reportedly took place within the last few weeks, and it's not certain they will firm up a deal.

A Disney spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment while Fox declined to comment. Besides the movie studio, TV production, and assets like Star and Sky, Disney would gain entertainment networks like National Geographic and FX. Disney isn't interested in Fox's broadcast network, Fox News; local broadcast affiliates; or sports programming, the network said.

Disney announced earlier this year that it would launch its own direct-to-consumer streaming services next year, putting the company head-to-head with Netflix.

"In addition to the movie studio, TV production and global assets such as Star and BSkyB, Disney would also add entertainment networks such as FX and Nat Geo".

With regard to "Deadpool", one fan noted, "The question is: If Disney buys 21st Century Fox, what happens to the current (and successful) trend of R-rated comic book movies?"

CNBC's sources said any potential deal between Fox and Disney wouldn't have Disney buying all of Fox. And the general logic of "you need scale to succeed in entertainment" makes sense, as that's also been cited as a factor in the pendingAT&T-Time Warner deal.

The company would obtain 21st Century's film studio and television channels including FX, FXX, National Geographic along with global stations such as Star and Sky.

If a deal like this did happen and did receive regulatory approval, it could have some significant effects on sports. Disney already owns the ABC television network and, with ESPN, is Fox's biggest rival in the cable sports business.

Variety reports Fox's stock price shot up more than 6 percent within 30 minutes of the CNBC report, and Disney shares also grew slightly to just under $100.
