Evra was warming up ahead of the clash in Portugal when he lashed out at his own fans who had gathered behind the advertising hoarding.

According to L'Equipe the 36-year-old may never wear the Marseille shirt again, as the club are wary that Evra could trigger a civil war with the supporters.

UEFA earlier confirmed it had opened disciplinary proceedings against Evra following the incident and his club have now taken action.

Video footage showed Evra aiming the kick at the Marseille fan as visiting players and supporters confronted each other at the side of the pitch.

France fullback Evra has been regularly targeted by Marseille fans since joining from Juventus during the close season and his poor performances have led coach Rudi Garcia to drop him from the starting line-up.

Marseille have launched an internal investigation after full-back Patrice Evra was dramatically red carded before kick-off for appearing to kick a club supporter on Thursday. "Patrice is a more than experienced player and we can not respond to insults so low and so incredible because they come from one of our supporters".

So what punishment will Patrice Evra receive following the kick on a fan?

"The club is continuing its investigation and will use all the legal means at its disposal against individuals who, under the guise of their passion for OM, endanger their reputation by entering the field and insulting a player instead of supporting him". He wasn't set to start, but Marseille couldn't name a replacement on their bench.
