A federal grand jury approved the first charges filed by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to an exclusive CNN report.

Details were still murky Friday because the charges are still sealed by judge's order.

Mueller's Office of the Special Counsel will make public an indictment on Monday, a USA official with firsthand knowledge of the process confirmed to NBC News, without disclosing the name of the target or the nature of the charges.

Mueller was appointed special counsel in May, shortly after the firing of then-FBI Director James Comey, to look into allegations that the Trump campaign might have colluded with Russian Federation to win the election.

Mueller, who headed the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2001 to 2013, was named special counsel in an announcement on May 17 from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

One day before, Manafort had met with Senate Intelligence Committee investigators to discuss a meeting between a Russian lawyer and members of Trump's campaign team that took place during the 2016 presidential election.

The Justice Department tapped Mueller, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to head the probe in May. By June, Trump himself was reportedly under investigation for obstruction of justice.
