Shazam is an acronym of the ancient world gods and historical figures Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury, from whom the young boy gets his superhero powers.

Shazam is now in pre-production and is expected to start shooting in February. Other actors who were earlier rumored to be considered for a role in Shazam includes John Cena, Billy Magnussen, Zane Holtz, Derek Theler, and Jake McDorman. Shazam! is now set for an April 2019 release. The film will not tie into any of the other DCEU films, and there will be no appearances by other DCEU franchise characters. Both the Shazam! and Black Adam movies are being developed concurrently and Shazam! expects a February 2018 start date for a 2019 release.

As for "Shazam", the movie was originally supposed to pit the hero against comic book foe Black Adam, who will be portrayed by Dwayne Johnson, but as production started to draw nearer the studio made a decision to put him in his own starring film instead. Warner Bros. also has plans for a Flash standalone film, a Batgirl film from Joss Whedon, and a sequel to last year's Suicide Squad. The character is expected to blend itself into the larger DC Universe that already has superheroes Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Aquaman, and Cyborg.
