"Leveraging technology to provide affordable and innovative products and services, Bharat-1 from Micromax is a 4G phone that helps bridge the digital divide and provides users with unlimited calling and unlimited data offers from BSNL at an affordable cost of Rs 97 every month", it said. Bharat-1 will be available in retail stores starting from this month's 20th.

Homegrown manufacturer Micromax today announced the launch of Bharat 1 in partnership with BSNL. A couple of weeks ago, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio also announced their much-awaited 4G VoLTE-enabled feature phone, dubbed as "JioPhone" in India with an "effective price" of Rs. 0 (Zero). Under the hood, the device is powered by a latest 1.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 dual-core processor coupled with Adreno 304 GPU to handle the graphics. For photography, it has a basic VGA selfie camera, and a 2-megapixel camera at the back. The feature supports 22 Indian languages and comes loaded with a suite of entertainment apps ranging from Live TV to music, movies, and videos. It is also a dual SIM one and can be used with other operators, as the device is not locked with BSNL. Homegrown telecom operator BSNL plans to tap this market in partnership with Micromax.

Micromax Bharat-1 is both powerful and affordable. Priced at Rs 2,200, the phone will support 3G connection as well.

Users will not be restricted to BSNL's network in this Micromax phone. Jumping on the bandwagon of cheap phones with 4G capabilities, BSNL has taken on Reliance Jio and Airtel in the battle.

"With the Rs 97 plan offered by BSNL with the Bharat 1, I believe the network provider will be able to make its mark with this offering in the competitive telecom industry", said Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha at the event.

"Connecting the last mile - to the Internet and relevant information - is an important part of the strategy for both BSNL and Micromax". With the Bharat 1, both BSNL and Micromax are aiming to target India's 500 million plus population that is still aloof from the connected world. "We are confident that Bharat 1 will help millions of users experience the data and calling experience like never before", added Srivastava.
