Pasquotank Correctional Institute Inmates See Multiple Injuries As Chaos Breaks Out

An attempted escape from a North Carolina prison left multiple people injured Thursday, public safety officials said.

An attempted prison escape in Elizabeth City resulted in several injured employees, the N.C. Department of Public Safety said in a tweet Thursday.

Corrections officer Justin Smith, 35, and 50-year-old Veronica Darden, a supervisor with Corrections Enterprises were killed, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

The prison near the northeast North Carolina coast houses almost 900 adult, male felons in both high-security and minimum-custody buildings. Minimum-security prisoners work outside the walls on road gangs for the county recycling department and performing other community labor.

PREVIOUS: At least 12 hospitalized including prison employees and inmates. In April, an argument between two inmates at the prison led to one prisoner stabbing the other several times in the upper torso. It was unclear how many were employees.

An official with the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office said deputies were at the scene and working to figure out what happened. Family of patients are being asked to avoid the Albemarle campus at this time.

The incident triggered lockdowns at three schools.

After school events and athletics at all three schools were cancelled.

Students who are bus riders who have not arrived home as of yet, will be returned to the school until we hear further from Emergency Management.
