'This opportunity came as somewhat of a surprise, but I never did give up on my ambition and childhood dream to reach F1.

And while it might seem likely that Kvyat will stay on, he has now been demoted twice by Red Bull - once from the senior team back to Toro Rosso in May 2016 and then dropped altogether after this year's Singapore event.

FAENZA, Italy (AP) - Brendon Hartley will race for Toro Rosso at next weekend's United States Grand Prix as a replacement for Pierre Gasly.

Kvyat will be back for Austin, Texas, because Spaniard Carlos Sainz moved to Renault after last weekend's race in Japan, with Toro Rosso still to confirm their definitive lineup for next year.

"The Austin track is one I really enjoy and one I have raced at recently".

New Zealand's last F1 driver was Mike Thackwell who raced in 1984.

Hartley last tested for Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso in 2009 and has not driven an F1 vehicle since 2012, before the new generation of turbo hybrid engines.

He tested for Toro Rosso at the end of 2009 but has not driven an F1 auto since a one-day test for Mercedes in 2012.

Pierre Gasly will reportedly miss the upcoming United States Grand Prix to instead challenge for the Super Formula title at Suzuka. "I'm trying not to put too many expectations on my F1 debut, but I feel ready for it".

He also took part in a young driver test at Magny-Cours for Mercedes in 2012, as well as spending time in the team's simulator.

He went on to fashion a terrific record in GT racing, including his win with the Porsche factory team at Le Mans this year.

He has raced in the Le Mans 24 Hours each year since, while also competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship since 2014.

But media outlets including the Spanish sports daily Marca now report that the frontrunner is in fact Brendon Hartley. "In the early days walking down the road, he had to have a stride ahead of you", Smith said.

"He was always looking to go quicker and look what he has got now. The fact that Formula 1 can look into this championship and say, "We need to choose a driver from here", I think that [shows] the level of drivers and level of teams and these programs", Bamber said.

"I'm convinced he'll do a fantastic job for us".
