He reportedly booked two rooms overlooking Grant Park at the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago, with arrival dates of August 1 and August 3 and check-out dates of August 6.

In addition to the 58 people killed, almost 500 were injured, some by gunfire, some trampled or otherwise hurt while running for cover.

"In the spirit of the safety of this community or anywhere else in the United States I think it's important to provide that information, but I don't have it", Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said in an interview on Thursday. Almost 20 of those weapons were in the Mandalay Bay resort hotel room where he opened fire into a crowd of more than 22,000 people.

Lombardo said Paddock spent decades stockpiling guns and living a "secret life" that investigators may never be able to fully understand.

Paddock, 64, checked into Room 32135 at the Mandalay Bay hotel on Sunday before he carried out the worst shooting in modern USA history that also injured over 500.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officers and Vegas police are now investigating Paddock's actions in the hour between his shooting a security guard and being himself found dead in his hotel room.

But police have said they suspect Paddock may have had assistance at some point before the killings, based on the large number of guns, ammunition and explosives that were found in the hotel suite, his home, his vehicle and a second home searched in Reno.

Charities have warned of a food crisis across the border and say 281,000 people desperately need food, including 145,000 children under five.

The pair stayed in "out-of-this-world penthouse suites like you wouldn't believe" because Paddock was a "high roller".

A spokeswoman confirms to WGN that a person matching the name Stephen Paddock reserved a room at the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago in August during Lollapalooza.

"I anticipate he was looking for anybody coming to take him into custody", Lombardo said.

Police are now trying to identify a "mystery woman" seen with Paddock in the days before he carried out the massacre. "You've got to make the assumption he had to have some help at some point".

While many questions are left unanswered, what has become clear is that Paddock planned his attack meticulously.

Police recovered about 50 firearms from three locations they searched, almost half of them from the hotel suite from which Paddock launched the attack.
