McDonald's Szechuan sauce is coming to Athens

McDonald's didn't stop there: To promote its new buttermilk chicken tenders, the restaurant is offering a new version of Szechuan sauce at locations across the country, including four in Chicago. Almost 20 years after a promotional run, the sauce re-emerged in the cultural hemisphere from Cartoon Network Adult Swim's popular television show "Rick and Morty".

With Sanchez's top ambition in life to once again taste that "sweet, teriyaki" sauce, Rick and Morty fans began pestering McDonald's to bring back their favorite discontinued sauce, tweeting at the fast-food chain relentlessly.

McDonald's will gift fans with 1,000 limited-edition posters, each celebrating one of its 10 sauces, like Honey Mustard, Sweet & Sour, Creamy Ranch, and of course, Szechuan Sauce. It disappeared after that year, but a joke in "Rick and Morty's" season three premiere prompted a widespread social media campaign for its return. The McDonalds in Midtown Detroit at 4235 Woodward starting at 2 p.m.

Fans took notice. Problem is, that sauce hasn't been available since 1998 when the Disney movie "Mulan" was released. You can find the sauce at the McDonald's at 3050 Carnegie Ave. and 1540 E. 55th St. "Technology is wonderful", said McDonald's Chef Michael Haracz in a news release. "It's a great moment for McDonald's and our fans that I'm definitely not taking for granted". They will also be giving out limited-edition posters.

In July, McDonald's sent a jug of Szechuan sauce to the show's co-creator Justin Roiland after finding it in "a dimension where it's always 1998".

So the fast-food chain made a decision to play along.

"Look at that art, look at the font. If anyone from McDonald's is reading this, I don't see anything wrong with what they're doing, and clearly neither does their legal department".

Select restaurants will have limited quantities of Szechuan Sauce dipping packets while supplies last.
