Brazil nursery arson attack: Four toddlers burnt alive

A security guard who worked for a day care center in the municipality of Janaúba, Minas Gerais, 554 kilometers away from Belo Horizonte, set fire to himself and to children while inside the establishment on the morning of Thursday (the 5th).

Around 50 people were injured, 15 of them seriously, as the blaze ripped through the Innocent People nursery in Janauba, southeastern Brazil.

The mayor of Janauba, Carlos Isaildon Mendes, declared seven days of mourning for the victims.

Local media outlets reported that Santos had been working at the day care center since 2008 and was recently fired.

It was learned that he too set himself on fire at the nursery school in Brazil.

The initial death toll of four rose to six when two badly-burned children died, according to news reports which quoted fire officials.

The guard, who was aged about 50 and named as Damião Soares dos Santos, was badly burnt and later died of his injuries.

Her father Nelson de Jesus Silva said: My daughter was very special, smart.

"I was thinking of changing nursery schools because we are preparing to move. I woke him up early to bring him here and when I saw him again he was dead in the hospital". Police are still looking into the causes of the attack.

Officers found numerous bottles of alcohol at his home, Nunes said. "As the children were bigger a lot of them were able to escape".

"I deeply regret this tragedy with the children in Janauba", Brazilian president Michel Temer tweeted.
