Akhilesh re-elected as Samajwadi Party chief for five years

Ahead of the upcoming Samajwadi Party (SP) presidential election, its chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said he had received "advance blessings and wishes" from his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav.

Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh had earlier announced he wouldn't be part of the party convention at Agra where the announcement of his son Akhilesh as national president was announced. Samajwadi Party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav proposed Akhilesh Yadav's name for the presidentship. Party's convention begun yesterday at Agra. "I told him that it a big convention and amendments in the party constitution will also be passed and without your blessings the party can not progress", he said.

Latching on to voices of dissent from within the BJP, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said that the "ill effects" of demonetisation were gradually becoming visible while traders were reeling under the "adverse impact" of GST. Akhilesh Yadav seems to be little concerned and is confident that he can steer the party to the 2019 Lok Sabha poll without setting his house in order.

"I assure you that I will fulfil the responsibility given to me".

Akhilesh Yadav has already expressed his willingness to join hands with an anti-BJP alliance for 2019 and attended the "BJP hatao, desh bachao" opposition rally organized by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad in Patna in August. "He [Mr. Shivpal] gave his blessings and congratulated me", Mr. Akhilesh said. Shivpal Yadav reportedly blessed Akhilesh Yadav.

However, the party's grand old man, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and his brother, Shiv Pal Yadav, were conspicuous by their absence.

However, senior party leaders were not sure whether Mulayam Singh Yadav, who has been invited personally by his son, would attend the meet or not.
