Decades before authorities say Stephen Paddock opened fire Sunday evening from a high-rise hotel near the Las Vegas Strip, leading to the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history - his father was one of the FBI's most-wanted fugitives.

On the surface, Paddock didn't seem like a typical mass murderer, said Clint Van Zandt, a former FBI hostage negotiator and supervisor in the bureau's behavioral science unit.

The bandit is understood to have wound up on the FBI's Most Wanted list in 1969 when he escaped from prison in Texas while serving a 20-year sentence.

The brother of Stephen Paddock, 64, said his family is "shocked, horrified, completely dumbfounded" by the shooting at a country music concert Sunday night, the deadliest in modern USA history. "Sometimes he would get picked with me and sometimes I would get picked with him", Alarcon said Tuesday.

Eric Paddock said he knew his brother had a couple of handguns and maybe one long rifle but did not know of any automatic weapons.

The elder Paddock was eventually caught in 1978, he died in 1998.

When police searched Paddock's home in Mesquite, Nevada-about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas-they discovered 19 more firearms, as well as explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sherriff Joseph Lombardo said.

Paddock often checked in on his mother, who lived in a home on Clear Lake in Mesquite, but neighbours hinted he "wasn't very sociable".

"The last time she talked to him, no indication of anything". "We haven't had any traffic stops, any law enforcement contact, no arrests or nothing", Averett said. I hardly know the family, but Steve is a nice boy.

The elder Paddock remained on the lam for almost a decade, living under an assumed name in Oregon. CNN reports that he previously lived in Orlando, Florida.

The gunman who shot 59 people at a Las Vegas country music concert may have been originally planning an attack at another music festival just one week earlier, the Daily Beast reported.

He has been divorced at least twice, including marriages that ended in 1980 and 1990.

Australian media said she was on holiday in the Philippines with three girlfriends.

In 2012, Paddock sued the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Resorts in Nevada, saying he slipped and fell on a wet floor there.

Paddock also had the advantage of time, using multiple weapons and possibly reloading.
