Russian Federation warns of "catastrophic consequences" if Korean dispute descends into war

The Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement today after the meeting in Moscow between Russian ambassador-at-large Oleg Burmistrov and Choe Son-hui, director-general of the North American department of North Korea's foreign ministry.

'We have not declared war against North Korea and frankly the suggestion of that is absurd, ' White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

A senior North Korean official in charge of U.S. affairs embarked her Russian Federation trip on Monday, Pyongyang's state media reported, amid escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula over the North's nuclear program.

"Unfortunately, Australia doesn't really get to choose whether or not North Korea threatens it - it's the choice that the North Korean leader (Kim Jong-un) makes", he told the ABC.

Moscow is considered friendly toward its former communist ally, but the country voted in favor of recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions condemning North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations.

South Korean Lee Cheol-uoo said the Pyongyang was bolstering its defences by moving aircraft to its east coast and taking other measures after USA bombers flew close to the Korean peninsula at the weekend. Moscow lobbied to weaken the sanctions, particularly regarding a full oil embargo.

Russian Federation and China have long called for the resumption of dialogue to resolve North Korea's nuclear standoff.

But in the Korean Peninsula, Russia's increasing involvement is welcomed by one of the US key ally in the region, too. It remains to be seen whether this strategy will work or if Moscow or Beijing actually still have leverage over the North Korean junta.

Russian Federation and China have previously said they both support a "suspension-for-suspension" approach to reign in North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons program.
