Google is developing a clandestine home device to compete with the Amazon Echo Show, according to a new TechCrunch report.

More supply chains for AI-based voice assistant devices and smart speakers have begun to emerge as almost all heavyweight tech companies including Google, Apple, Samsung Electronics, Amazon, Microsoft and China-based Alibaba, Xiaomi Technology and Tencent all have jumped on the bandwagon, according to industry sources. It will let you make video calls, leverage Google Assistant, view Google Photos, and watch YouTube videos. Google was originally planning to launch its smart hub sometime next year, but with the Echo Show already on the market, it is feeling the heat to release it in 2017.

The smart screen speaker will run on Android, which will allow third-parties to build apps for it and it is reported that the company is planning to introduce Netflix on it as well. Google's Google Home speaker costs $130, though Apple's upcoming smart speaker, HomePod, has not even hit the market yet. A few days ago The Verge reported that trying to access YouTube on the Echo Show brought up the following error message: "Currently, Google is not supporting Youtube on Echo Show". First off you need to be a new subscriber to take advantage of the promo, so current subscribers or older are not eligible to get the free credit. Of particular note was its second smart screen device, the compact new Echo Spot. Next week on October 4, Google will be unveiling new products including the Pixel 2 smartphones and the smaller Google Home.

The Amazon Echo Plus looks like the original Echo (a tall cylindrical unit) but will double as a hub for the smart home.

It's not just the number of devices that reflect the significance of the announcement. Amazon's implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show violates our terms of service, creating a broken user experience.

To start with the video calling feature, Echo Show has a 5-megapixel front shooter, which is enough to make video calls. The Manhattan smart screen could also be a way for Google to push its Duo and Hangouts video calling services to more users.

Amazon dominates the market with 76 percent of the USA installed base, or about 15 million devices, while Google Home has about 5 million devices, or 24 percent of the market, data from CIRP shows.
