Alyssa Pointer/TNS/NewscomViolent crime in the USA rose again in 2016 for the second year in a row, according to national crime statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation today.

Overall violent crimes in CT including murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults increased 2.3 percent to 8,123 in 2016. Nationally, the violent crime rate was 386.3.

As a candidate on the campaign trail, President Donald Trump repeatedly cited the murder-rate uptick, which jumped almost 8 percent in 2016, and the overall increase in violent crime as justification for his calls for a return to "law and order".

There were about 16,500 homicides across the country in 2016 - an increase of 1,278 year-over-year - but those make up just 1 percent of the 1.2 million violent crimes reported.

Across the US, the homicide rate also increased by 7.9 percent in 2016, marking an overall jump of more than 20 percent since 2014, the report said.

Across 10 Northern California cities, only three had violent crime rates below the national rate in 2016.

Albuquerque saw violent crime increase by 15.5 percent and property crime rise by 13.3 percent while violent crime in Santa Fe rose by 4.18 percent and property crime went up by 4 percent. "And we must do it together". Aggravated assault and rape (legacy definition) offenses increased 5.1 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively, and robbery increased 1.2 percent.

Despite two years of elevated murder rates nationwide, slayings here are down even though violent crime as a whole is not.

Some criminologists have contested that conclusion, saying that rates for overall crime and violent crime are still much lower today than they were several decades ago.

The city's property crime drop in 2016 was driven by a 17 percent decline in burglaries.

There were 78 murders and non-negligent manslaughters in the state in 2016, a substantial decrease from 2015 when there were 116. While relatively small, those decreases came after both violent and property crime spiked in the city in 2015.

The FBI statistics are part of an annual report assembled from data collected by law enforcement agencies across the country.

The numbers are for last year, which saw the overall crime rate fall for the fifteenth year in a row. During that same time period, property crime declined 40%.

Compared with 2015, the report found that the number at convenience stores rose the most among six of the seven locations tracked in 2016.

The only category that showed a decrease in the city previous year was reports of rape, which fell by 5.69 percent.

However, Sessions has been a proponent of the theory that crime has risen as scrutiny of local police has intensified and hurt morale, causing officers to be less aggressive on the streets, AP reported.
