Key GOP Swing Vote On Health Care: 'Difficult To Envision' Supporting Bill

The Senate's vehicle to pass a health care bill with just 51 votes expires at the end of this month, and it only takes one more Republican "no" vote to stop the legislation from passing altogether.

Friday, Arizona Republican John McCain became the latest "no", saying he could not "in good conscience" support the latest effort to repeal Obamacare.

The Senate faces a September 30 deadline for deciding on the bill under an expiring rule that lets the healthcare proposal pass with just a simple majority, instead of the 60-vote threshold needed for most legislation.

"McCain let his best friend L.G. down!"

"It is very hard for me to envision a scenario where I would end up voting for this bill", Collins said.

President Trump singled the Kentucky Republican out to pressure senators to get in line supporting Sens.

Multiple aides involved in the process say the focus on winning Alaska Sen.

Senate GOP leaders are crafting 11th-hour changes in their last-ditch Obamacare repeal bill to win over Sens.

Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) pushed back on working with Democrats on heath care reform on Sunday, saying ObamaCare is a placeholder for "BernieCare" for Democrats. He said he opposed a key pillar of the legislation - transforming much of the federal spending under Obama's law into block grants of money that states could spend with wide latitude. However, after McCain's "no", if Paul remains a "no" and Collins also declares definitively she won't vote for the bill, Republicans openly acknowledge that's the ballgame.

The Republican leader is also keeping a close eye this week on the Senate race in Alabama, where Republican Sen. John McCain's decision to oppose the latest Republican health care plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the effort is still ongoing, GOP aides say - at least for the moment. We must not consent to such undemocratic government actions but together develop a health care bill that fulfills our public responsibility to support and empower all Americans.

McCain was the decisive vote against the GOP's last repeal effort, in July.

A report by Politico suggests that the President has had phone conversations with Paul with regards to the bill, and he has twice mentioned Paul in recent tweets.

Here's what Trump's tweeted about Paul: "I think he may find a way to get there for the good of the Party!"

He also claimed that Arizona's Obamacare premiums went up 116% past year, and added that Sen. Collins said sponsors were making last-minute adjustments in the measure's formulas for distributing federal money to states. On Saturday, six such organizations including the American Medical Association and American Hospital Association issued a joint statement urging the Senate to reject it.

"I'm concerned about the impact on costs and coverage".

When Smith asked Cornyn if he would be a no vote on Graham-Cassidy his question received a round of applause from the audience.

Trump said that McCain's last senatorial campaign "was all about repeal and replace, repeal and replace". States could loosen coverage requirements under the law's mandates, including prohibiting insurers from charging seriously ill people higher premiums and letting them sell policies covering fewer services.
