The war-of-words between President Trump and a wide cross-section of American sports showed no sign of abating judging by the pre-match events at Wembley stadium on Sunday.

Played in London, it was the first NFL game to take place since President Donald Trump began speaking out and tweeting against players who kneel during the national anthem.

Lewis, an honorary captain for the game against the Jaguars, brought a ton of history to his action on the Wembley Stadium sideline.

Trump had made several tweets and comments ahead of this week's game, including calling for those kneeling to be fired and saying the National Football League is "boring".

In response to the anthem protests across the league, Trump tweeted Sunday afternoon that "standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable". Kaepernick told the press that he was protesting the treatment of blacks in the United States. A few players on both sides kneeled while the anthem played, and there was a defiant tone in the air given President Trump's "son of a b*tch" quip. "We have a lot of work to do, and we can do it, but the comments by the President make it harder", Khan added.

All Panthers players on the field stood for the anthem. While everything got started on Friday night, and Saturday saw a slew of responses to POTUS' comments about the National Football League and Steph Curry, everybody was sort of just waiting for Sunday to finally roll around to see how the majority of National Football League players would react. "We need to stand up when we play the national anthem". "He's fired, '" he said to loud applause. So we're not participating today.

The tweets came the morning after Trump took on two of the country's most popular sports leagues by withdrawing the White House invitation for the National Basketball Association champion Golden State Warriors and by calling for NFL owners to fire any "son of a bitch" who "disrespects our flag".

He's fired, ' " Trump said to loud applause Friday night at a rally in Huntsville, Alabama, comments he kept echoing over the next two days.

"The callous and offensive comments made by the president are contradictory to what this great country stands for", York said. Since then, the Bills, Browns, Colts, Dolphins, 49ers, Patriots, Packers, Seahawks, and the head of the NFL Players' Association have issued statements denouncing Trump's comments.
