Hurricane warnings are in effect for St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe and Dominica.

"Hurricane conditions are first expected within portions of the Leeward Islands by Monday night, with tropical storm conditions beginning on Monday", the center said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Maria is likely to swell into major hurricane status by midweek as it heads for Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

"All of Puerto Rico will experience hurricane force winds".

A slightly weaker but larger Hurricane Jose continued on a path northward just off the East Coast on Monday.

Norma had winds of about 50 mph (85 kph) and it was centered about 140 miles (225 kilometers) south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas.
