5 dead at nursing home after Irma cuts power

At least five people died and 120 were evacuated at a nursing home in Hollywood, Florida, according to fire officials. A kitchen worker told the Miami Herald that the nursing home was using its generator's power to cook food but not to power its air conditioning.

Six people have died from a nursing home in Hollywood, Fla., that lost power in the wake of Hurricane Irma, and dozens more had to be evacuated to nearby hospitals.

"As you can imagine, evacuating 115 people from a facility is quite an undertaking", the spokeswoman said. Two others died after reaching hospital.

The vast majority of South Florida remains without power three days after Irma nailed South Florida.

She said she had yet to see any state or federal agencies or utility companies working on the ground yet.

"We are conducting a criminal investigation [and] not ruling anything out at this time", Police Chief Tomas Sanchezsaid at a press conference Wednesday.
