Mashable reports that Sarasota's west coast bay has been left dry as the water drained away in the storm.

Local resident Michael Sechler shared a photograph of one of the manatees, beached due to an extremely low tide, on Facebook and recalled how he came across the sea mammals.

As Irma waged its northward warpath Sunday, about 100 curious onlookers, some with selfie sticks, trekked 200 yards into what is normally four feet of ocean water in the Old Tampa Bay. Then he spotted two stranded manatees.

The viral Facebook post has more than 96,000 likes and 68,000 shares.

"We just let nature take its course", she said.

Some of those stunned and curious residents walked into the vast patches of sand and underwater growth that used to be the bay-a risky thing to do, given the water would rush back. "My friends and I couldn't move these massive animals ourselves, and we called every service we could think of, but no one answered".

The animals swam off into the water once they were rescued, according to witnesses.

The individuals who found the manatees originally tried to move them themselves, but were not successful and had to bring in further assistance.

Not to worry, the story does have a happy ending.

Sechler says the manatees were rescued about two hours after he posted that photo on social media.
