"Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process, but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ".

Previously we had learned some new information about Poe's alterations to his X-Wing fighter from Empire Magazine and now they're sharing a picture of Finn and Rose in the Canto Bight Casino. That news came just weeks after Phil Lord and Chris Miller departed the Han Solo spin-off film, which was already deep into production, only to be replaced by Ron Howard.

Colin Trevorrow: Trevorrow directed the well-received Safety Not Guaranteed, an indie you only saw if you know who Aubrey Plaza is. He's been working on the film since then, looking at a production start in January 2018.

Trevorrow's departure as director of the upcoming movie has been rumored since June before his film "The Book of Henry" failed to deliver at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to pressure from fans and stakeholders, Episode IX also has the added responsibility of dealing with the unexpected death late previous year of actress Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia.

In the wake of the Trevorrow news, many people were quick to speculate online about who might take up the mantle. In the first movie alone, she's said to have suggested killing Obi-Wan Kenobi, keeping the kiss between Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia before they swung across the chasm inside the Death Star, and heavily revised the trench scene at the end. But "Star Wars" has the unique advantage of having incredible resources that it can rebound.
