For Tennessee, Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano have been fighting for the starting position.

With incredible anticipation and timing, Callaway high-pointed the ball over Tech defenders with relative ease to the tune of four catches for 115 yards and two scores.

In the first overtime, Marshall scored on a 1-yard run and Tennessee responded with a 1-yard run from Kelly. It took some questionable coaching decisions by Paul Johnson and key mistakes from that team for it to happen.

"He played his tail off", said Johnson of his new team leader.

The deficit seemed insurmountable, given the Vols' struggles to that point, but Callaway erased half of it in one blur.

So we didn't make the play. "We found out about our will to win".

While the Vols perhaps got some fortunate bounces, with at least one player crediting a touch of divine intervention, Coach Butch Jones and company saw plenty of heroics en route to earning the Dodd Trophy and a major lift for a Top 25 program.

All Marshall did on Tuesday night was terrorize the Tennessee defense as he accounted for 369 total yards and five touchdowns. He tied his career-best mark with a 70-yard punt in the second quarter that forced Georgia Tech to start a drive at its own 14-yard line after a four yard return.

Going for two in the second overtime was not the right call. With player's graduating and declaring early for the National Football League draft, the "next man up" philosophy is one every program must subscribe to.

Watching the Georgia Tech season opener was a popular way to end Labor Day weekend.

The deficit grew larger to 21-7 in the third quarter. That was the way things stood at the half.

Whether it's good history or bad history will depend on if NASCAR's best can rise to the top or if they wind up on the bottom. However, Hamlin's dominance for much of the race almost went for naught as a result of the aforementioned pit road mistake.

Georgia Tech dominated time of possession 56:27 to 18:33 and still lost.

Quarterback TaQuon Marshall was better than anyone could have reasonably hoped.

A shortage of big plays was among the chief failings of the Jackets' defense last season, particularly through the first eight games. The Yellow Jackets tried to win it with a two-point conversion, but Marshall was stopped at the line and his desperation pass fell incomplete to end the game. The drive stalled, however, and Tech trotted Davis out to attempt a 47-yard field goal which he shanked badly. Dormady connected with Callaway for a 10-yard touchdown in the right corner of the end zone to cut the lead to 21-14. But a comment made August 21 reflected uncertainty.

Marshall went long across to the middle to Qua Searcy for a 42-yard strike down to the Tennessee 7-yard line. The Jackets led 14-7 at halftime, accepted the ball to open the second half and promptly took complete control of the game with an 11-play, 80-yard drive that consumed almost six minutes - almost 20 percent of the available game time to that point. The team was getting steamrolled on defense and needing three quarters to find anything resembling an offense.

After an 8-for-20, 52-yard first half, performance, Dormady settled into the game, and he eventually completed 20 of 37 for 221 yards.

Sweat had five tackles and a seven-yard sack in Saturday night's loss to No. 1 Alabama.

Helping the Vols shake off a sluggish defensive effort - Georgia Tech piled up 655 total yards, including 535 on the ground - was punter Trevor Daniel. But Davis, who won the kicking job this week, shanked the kick and Tennessee took over at the 30.

"Obviously I'm pretty torn up, but you know what, I've got to keep going", junior linebacker Brant Mitchell said.

Bain has a compelling story according to coach Jones. "In the locker room, he got the biggest cheer and respect from our players". For the last few years, Georgia Tech had one of the most reliable kickers in the Power 5 in Harrison Butker. Nine of the carries picked up first downs or scored a touchdown.

John Kelly punctuated the second overtime with his fourth touchdown and the final two of his 128 hard-earned yards.

(0:06 - 1st) TaQuon Marshall 1 yard touchdown run.
