Talking is not the answer, says Trump on N Korea

The operation involved two B-1Bs from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam; four U.S. Marine F-35Bs from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan; two Koku Jieitai (Japan Air Self-Defense Force) F-15Js; and four Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) F-15Ks.

It came when US-South Korea troops held annual military exercises on the peninsula, which Pyongyang strongly opposes.

Under a bilateral agreement with the United States, South Korea is now restricted to ballistic missiles with a maximum range of 800km and a payload of 500km. Washington and Seoul faced calls to postpone or downsize this year's drills.

The two Koreas have shared the world's most heavily fortified border since their war in the early 1950s ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

In a statement, US Pacific Command said the flyover was a "direct response to North Korea's intermediate range ballistic missile launch".

North Korea's weapons program has been progressing at a rapid pace under leader Kim Jong Un.

Japan is closely allied with the United States on security issues and hosts American bases and tens of thousands of troops on its territory, which North Korea considers a threat.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a readout of the call late Wednesday that both Lavrov and Tillerson condemned North Korea for the most recent launch and called for dialogue.

Tuesday's aggressive missile launch - likely the longest ever from North Korea - over the territory of a close U.S. ally sends a clear message of defiance as Washington and Seoul conduct war games nearby. It also flight-tested a pair of developmental ICBMs in July.

Trump and Abe spoke by phone and said that in face of an "escalating" situation with North Korea that close cooperation between their countries and with South Korea was needed, Abe told reporters.

South Korea's main spy agency has previously asserted that it does not think Pyongyang now has the ability to develop miniaturized nuclear weapons that can be mounted on long-range ballistic missiles.
