As Brics Comes to a Close, India and China Hold Bilateral Talks

South African President Jacob Zuma on Monday invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit his country at a meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in China's Xiamen.

China's President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for stronger solidarity and cooperation among emerging market and developing countries to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

They also need to forge chains of interconnected development and seek strength in unity, the Chinese president continued.

"One of the important points that was made during the meeting was that peace and tranquillity in the border areas was a prerequisite for further development of our relationship", the Indian foreign secretary said.

Jaishankar said that issue was not discussed at Tuesday's bilateral between Modi and Xi, and that "the counterterrorism issues were largely taken up in the discussions leading to the BRICS".

The meeting has been booked days after the two nations pulled back their troops following two-and-half-month outskirt standoff at Doklam in the Sikkim segment.

The "BRICS Plus" countries are Egypt, Kenya, Tajikistan, Mexico and Thailand.

The Brics summit brings together the world's five large non-Western economies - the other members are Brazil, Russia and South Africa - who are seeking a greater say in world affairs.

Lashkar-e Taiba is a militant group based in Pakistan that India has blamed for cross-border attacks, including a 2008 assault on Mumbai in which 166 people were killed. The BRICS countries included names of terrorist organizations based in Pakistan like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in their manifesto.
