BRICS Summit in Xiamen Raises Hopes

Defend its all-weather friend, China has said it would object to any discussion about Pakistan's alleged role in sheltering terrorists during the upcoming BRICS summit, which would also be attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. China as the hosting nation has also invited the heads of states that represent regions from all various parts of the world, including Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Guinea and Tadjikistan. The bank aims to address a massive infrastructure funding gap in the member countries, which account for nearly half the world's population and about a fifth of global economic output.

The ministry of external affairs on Friday said that a possible meeting between Modi and Jinping can not be ruled out as it is a common practice to arrange bilateral meetings on the sidelines of such multilaterals, reported the Times of India. There was no confirmation from officials of both sides if they would meet on Tuesday before Modi leaves Xiamen for his next stop in Myanmar that evening.

There the two countries will focus on exploring new areas of cooperation. The report was released ahead of the BRICS summit in Xiamen next week. Earlier, Chinese vice trade minister, Wang Shouwen, said the BRICS meeting was expected to "reach consensus for actions" to oppose trade protectionism.

He is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the three-day event.

"To be realistic, I think we shouldn't expect China-India relation could be back to the high point like pre-2014 period".

China is anxious that Modi might make a reference to Pakistan's approach of sheltering known terrorists as he did during the last BRICS conference in Goa. At the Xiamen summit, they will be taking aim at protectionist policies and values being instituted by US President Donald Trump and his European counterparts.

Highlighting the significance of BRICS, the Prime Minister said it has important contributions in addressing global challenges and upholding world peace and security.

In a statement posted on Facebook and Twitter, the Prime Minister also mentioned his visit to Myanmar after the BRICS summit, and hoped it would deepen bilateral cooperation.

There has been substantive progress achieved since South Africa joined Brazil, Russia, India and China to form the bloc in 2011.
