Volkswagen Scrappage Scheme Launched, Offers Big Savings

Audi's scrappage scheme offers between £2000 and £8000 off its range - the smallest £2000 saving applied to the Q2 and the largest £8000 saving offered on its Q7 e-tron plug-in hybrid.

A similar trade-in scheme exists in Germany.

The move comes in the wake of the group's "Dieselgate" scandal, in which around 11 million vehicles globally were found to be fitted with devices created to cheat official laboratory emissions testing.

VW's German scheme offered a discount of up to 10,000 euros (£9,000) to trade in diesel vehicles.

Vehicle manufacturers have been under increasing political pressure, especially in Germany, to encourage consumers to buy less polluting cars.

Larger discounts for the brand's electrified models can also be combined with the Government's grant for low-emission vehicles.

Renault's scrappage scheme also sees cars traded in being destroyed and specifically targets Euro 4 vehicles registered by December 31, 2009.

In July, European antitrust officials confirmed they were looking into claims that Germany's major carmakers may have been operating a cartel since the 1990s, colluding on everything from vehicle development to diesel emissions systems.

Between £1,800 and £6,000 can be had off the price of a new Volkswagen, depending on model, which all meet the latest emissions limits that came into force in September 2014.

On Wednesday, Boston will start right-hander Rick Porcello (8-15, 4.57 ERA), and the Blue Jays will counter with left-hander J.A. He scattered three hits through the first two innings before rolling until the sixth, when the Red Sox broke a scoreless tie.

Meanwhile, the marque's plug-in hybrid and fully electric models are leading players in the EV world.

Jim Holder, editorial director of Haymarket Automotive, told the BBC: "The auto industry is trying to get on the front foot after an extended period of negative headlines in the wake of dieselgate".

He said VW's scrappage incentives would vary from country to country due to factors such as transport costs and vehicles being cheaper in its home market.

According to commentators though, VW's United Kingdom scheme fell short of the terms offered to drivers in its home market.

For example, someone trading in an older diesel from any brand will get a discount of €3,000 off a new Golf, €3,750 off a new Skoda Superb, or €5,000 on a new Audi A4.

Mr Holder added that "it's not clear" what impact the VW scheme will have on vehicle sales. But, she added: "It is also about getting new customers into showrooms at a time when vehicle sales are subdued - down by 2.2% year on year in the first half of 2017".

Customers can get a discount of £2,000 off models including Aygo, Prius and Hilux, and £4,000 off a Land Cruiser.

Meanwhile, Renault's programme allows customers to benefit from an allowance of between £3,000 and £7,000, including scrappage support, towards the purchase of a new vehicle or van.

AA president Edmund King said: 'The vast majority of drivers care about air quality and support scrappage schemes to encourage the take-up of cleaner, greener vehicles.
