Cummins Embarrasses Tesla by Unveiling This Monstrous New Electric Big Rig

U.S. engine maker Cummins said it has left Tesla behind in the race to develop an all-electric engine for large trucks. The truck swaps out the semi's standard gas-guzzling 12-liter engine for an electric one powered by a 140 KWh battery pack.

Armed with a 140kW battery pack, the day-cab hauler that is also called the Aeos has a range of about 160km on a single charge for city driving that's extendable to 480km with additional battery packs. For comparison, reports say Tesla's upcoming electric semi truck will have 200 to 300 miles of range.

With a claimed range of 100 miles, it certainly seems apt to handle short drives, and Cummins said it only takes an hour to charge. Electric cars and trucks produce zero emissions, which is important at a time when climate change is such a big concern. However, it's important to mention Cummins will not actually build the trucks as instead it will supply the entire battery electronics system and is going to purchase the battery cells from a yet unknown provider.

A new electric powertrain is key, but it can't do it all on its own - the AEON ekes out as much range as it can through low-rolling resistance tires and regenerative braking.

According to CNET, Cummins will also offer a range-extender version of the concept truck, which will use a diesel engine to recharge the battery on the fly.

Aerodynamics are also playing an important rule to further boost the truck's efficiency, which is why the conventional side mirrors have been replaced by cameras to reduce air drag. Cummins is a company that has been around for almost 100 years, and this reveal telegraphs the company's intention to wade into battle with a new generation of transportation startups like Nikola Motor Company and electric-bus company Proterra for the future of freight. The weight of the electric powertrain is roughly equal to that of the engine, aftertreatment, transmission and fuel tank. "These engine options offer 50 per cent fuel savings compared to today's diesel hybrids with zero emissions", it says.
